An Atlas for Interpreting Γ-ray Pulsar Light Curves

چکیده
We have simulated a population of young spin-powered pulsars and computed the beaming pattern and light curves for the three main geometrical models: polar cap emission, two-pole caustic (“slot gap”) emission and outer magnetosphere emission. The light curve shapes depend sensitively on the magnetic inclination α and viewing angle ζ. We present the results as maps of observables such as peak multiplicity and γ-ray peak separation in the (α, ζ) plane. These diagrams can be used to locate allowed regions for radio-loud and radioquiet pulsars and to convert observed fluxes to true all-sky emission. Subject headings: gamma-rays pulsars stars: neutron

Gamma-rays from binary system with energetic pulsar and Be star with aspherical wind: PSR B1259-63/SS2883
At least one massive binary system containing an energetic pulsar, PSR B125963/SS2883, has been recently detected in the TeV γ-rays by the HESS telescopes. These γ-rays are likely produced by particles accelerated in the vicinity of the pulsar and/or at the pulsar wind shock, in comptonization of soft radiation from the massive star. However, the process of γ-ray production in such systems can ...
متن کاملThe Rest of the Story: Radio Pulsars and IR through γ-ray Emission
Recent observations have detected a number of young pulsars from the power peak in the γ-ray band to the incoherent photon peak in the optical/IR. We have made progress on the multiwavelength phenomenology of pulsar emission and beaming, but a wide variation of light curves between different objects and different energy bands makes the full story complex. I sketch here a ‘Unified Model’ of puls...
متن کاملShock geometry and inverse Compton emission from the wind of a binary pulsar
PSR B1259−63 is a 47ms radio pulsar with a high spin-down luminosity which is in a close, highly eccentric 3.5-year orbit about a bright stellar companion. The binary system may be a detectable source of hard γ-rays produced by inverse Compton scattering of photons from the B2e star SS2883 by electrons and positrons in the pulsar wind. The star provides an enormous density of optical photons in...
متن کاملHigh-energy Radiation from Pulsars : a Three Dimensional Model Approach
We suggest that some observational features of high-energy radiation from pulsars should be explained in terms of three dimensional geometric models, e.g. the phase-resolved X-ray and γ-ray spectra and the energy dependent light curves from various pulsars. In this paper, we present a three dimensional pulsar outer-magnetospheric gap model to explain these observational features. The outer-magn...

We derive light curves for the hard γ-ray emission, at energies up to several TeV, expected from the unique pulsar/Be-star binary system PSR B1259−63. This is the only known system in our galaxy in which a radio pulsar is orbiting a main sequence star. We show that inverse Compton emission from the electrons and positrons in the shocked pulsar wind, scattering target photons from the Be star, p...
